Privacy Policy

What we collect

We collect nothing. ShootCalc has no user accounts, no sign-up forms, and no contact forms that store submissions. We do not collect names, email addresses, or any other personally identifiable information.

Your web host may record standard server access logs — IP address, requested URL, browser user-agent, and timestamp — as part of normal web server operation. These logs are not used for tracking, are not sold or shared, and are retained only as long as the hosting provider requires for security and abuse prevention.

How your photos and files are handled

The Shutter Count Checker reads EXIF metadata from JPEG and TIFF files you select. This processing happens entirely inside your browser using the JavaScript File API. Your photo is never uploaded to any server — it is read locally, the shutter count is extracted, and the data stays on your device. Closing or refreshing the tab removes any trace of the file from our code.

Third-party services

The Golden Hour Calculator offers location search by city name. When you type a city name and pause, your browser sends a search query to the Nominatim geocoding API, operated by the OpenStreetMap Foundation. This is the only outbound request ShootCalc makes on your behalf. The request includes the search text you typed and your IP address (as part of normal HTTPS traffic); no other data is sent.

If you use the crosshair button to detect your location via GPS, your browser's Geolocation API is used directly — your coordinates are passed to the sun calculation code locally and are not sent to any server.

OpenStreetMap Foundation's privacy policy applies to Nominatim requests: osmfoundation.org/wiki/Privacy_Policy.

All other tools — Depth of Field, ND Filter, Crop Factor, Hyperfocal Distance, and Print Size — are fully self-contained and make no outbound network requests of any kind.

Cookies and local storage

ShootCalc sets no cookies. We do not use session cookies, persistent cookies, or tracking cookies of any kind.

We write one item to your browser's local storage: your preferred color theme (theme, value light or dark). This value never leaves your device and can be cleared at any time by clearing your browser's site data. All calculator state is held in memory and is lost when you navigate away or close the tab.

Analytics and advertising

ShootCalc does not currently use any analytics service. We do not serve advertising and have no relationship with ad networks. There are no tracking pixels or third-party scripts embedded in the site at this time.

We plan to add privacy-respecting, cookieless analytics (such as Plausible or Fathom) to understand which tools are most useful and how the site performs. These services do not use cookies, do not track individuals across sites, and are designed to be GDPR-compliant by default.

We may also introduce advertising in the future to help cover hosting costs. If we do, we will update this page before any ads go live and will prefer ad networks that respect user privacy. The “Last updated” date at the top will reflect any such change.

Children

ShootCalc is a general-purpose photography tool. We do not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children under the age of 13. Because we collect no data at all, there is nothing to delete or review if a child uses the site.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes — for example, by adding analytics or a contact form — we will update this page and change the “Last updated” date at the top. Because we have no way to notify users directly, we encourage you to check this page occasionally if you use the site regularly.
